There are indignities a gentleman expects with age. Being sick is one of them. Being forced to listen to a puppy announce that she is the smartest dog in her class is another. Unfortunately, Agatha’s latest achievement left Charlie facing a far more troubling possibility: she might actually be improving.

With Dad Person away for the week, Charlie assumes his rightful place in charge of the household. The Menace finally masters the potty signal after eight weeks of instruction, while Charlie quietly faces a harder challenge of his own: navigating a familiar world as his eyesight continues to fade.

At fourteen, Charlie has mastered the fine art of patience. While Agatha races after every sound, smell, and fallen morsel, Charlie waits comfortably for life’s best things to arrive. As the little menace learns “Leave It,” Charlie reflects on age, wisdom, trust, and the rewards of being cherished at home.

Charlie’s fading eyesight brings a third daily medicine and an important lesson about growing older. Meanwhile, Agatha begins Puppy School, where she learns Focus, Sit, and Come Touch. As both dogs face new challenges, Charlie realizes education is not only for the young—and Agatha may someday become his guide.

Charlie knows exactly what overnight bags, laundry baskets, and packed dog food mean: a ride in the truck. Agatha, however, has no idea that visiting comes with rules, expectations, and family honor. By the time they reach their destination, Charlie’s careful instruction may already have gone too far for everyone.

Charlie loves a proper truck ride: a plush seat, cool air, and respectable behavior. Agatha prefers attacking water, challenging the blower, and leaning into the wind. Charlie insists he is only monitoring her safety—not worrying about her.

Charlie believes every civilized household depends on rules. Unfortunately, Agatha treats manners, boundaries, and basic safety as optional suggestions. As one chaotic morning spirals through stolen towels, spilled water, invaded beds, and ignored instructions, Charlie tries to explain why rules matter—while becoming increasingly convinced that puppy brains arrive unfinished.

There comes a point in every gentleman’s life when he must accept that the world is not going to reorganize itself according to his preferences. After two or three weeks, I reluctantly reached that conclusion. The little menace was not visiting.

There are many indignities associated with growing old. Your hearing becomes selective. Your eyesight becomes decorative. Your knees file formal complaints every morning.

I knew something was wrong before the truck stopped moving. At fourteen, you learn to trust your instincts, particularly when your eyesight has gone mostly decorative and the people responsible for your comfort have been gone far longer than necessary.
